Why Choose the ABB DWS External Sensor?
The ABB DWS is an external light-intensity sensor designed specifically for use with the ABB DWTL1 digital weekly twilight time switch. It provides the DWTL1 with external ambient-light measurement, enabling automatic switching according to detected daylight levels as part of a programmed lighting-control system.
The DWS is supplied as the sensor used with the DWTL1 and is also available separately as a replacement sensor. Its remote installation allows ambient light to be measured outside the electrical enclosure, helping the connected DWTL1 respond appropriately to changing natural-light conditions.
Designed for outdoor sensing duties, the DWS features an IP65 protection rating and compact dimensions of approximately 48 × 40 × 48 mm. It supports a cable connection of up to 50 m, providing installation flexibility where the optimum light-sensing position is some distance from the DWTL1 controller.

Reliable External Light Sensing for the DWTL1
Twilight-control systems require an external sensor to detect changes in natural illumination independently of the electrical panel location. When connected to the ABB DWTL1, the DWS supplies the light-level information required for automatic twilight control, allowing connected lighting or other electrical loads to respond to changing ambient conditions.
The IP65 enclosure protects the sensor against dust and water jets, while the supported cable distance of up to 50 m allows the sensing point to be positioned where it can obtain a representative measurement of outdoor light. As an original ABB replacement component, the DWS is designed specifically for integration with the DWTL1.
Typical Applications
- External light sensing for ABB DWTL1 installations.
- Automatic exterior lighting control.
- Commercial and public-building lighting systems.
- Shop-front and signage lighting control.
- Car-park and pathway lighting automation.
- Replacement of an existing DWTL1 external sensor.
