Why Choose the ABB TR160/A Toroidal Transformer?
The ABB TR160/A is an openable toroidal transformer designed for residual-current monitoring and earth-leakage protection systems. With a large 160 mm internal diameter, it allows the active conductors of higher-capacity electrical circuits to pass through the sensing core while providing the residual-current measurement signal required by a compatible ABB monitoring relay.
Its openable split-core construction is particularly useful where installation around existing conductors is required, reducing the need to disconnect and thread installed cables through a closed toroid. The TR160/A uses a 500/1 transformation ratio and is designed for use with ABB residual-current relays such as the ELR range.
Designed for electrical distribution and industrial control applications, the TR160/A combines a 160 mm aperture with flexible mounting orientation, screw-terminal connections and IP20 protection. It forms the sensing element of a residual-current monitoring system, allowing the connected relay to identify leakage or earth-fault currents and initiate the required alarm or protective action.

Reliable Residual-Current Sensing
The TR160/A operates by surrounding the active conductors of the monitored circuit. Under normal conditions, the vector sum of the currents flowing through those conductors is effectively zero. If an insulation fault or earth-leakage path develops, the resulting current imbalance creates a residual magnetic flux in the toroidal core, producing a signal that can be evaluated by the connected residual-current relay.
Because the TR160/A is the sensing transformer rather than a standalone protective device, it is used as part of a complete residual-current monitoring arrangement with a compatible relay and, where protective disconnection is required, suitable circuit-breaking equipment. Its openable 160 mm core makes it particularly practical for retrofitting monitoring to existing installations with large conductors.
