Why Choose the ABB ELR96PF Residual Current Monitor?

The ABB ELR96PF is an electronic Type A residual current monitor and relay designed for monitoring and protection of low-voltage electrical distribution networks. As part of ABB’s Earth Monitoring Devices range, it operates with an external toroidal transformer to continuously monitor earth leakage current and control associated circuit protection equipment when the selected residual current threshold is exceeded.

The ELR96PF combines adjustable residual current sensitivity and trip delay with Fail Safe operation, automatic reset and frequency filtering. Its frequency filter improves immunity to harmonic current components that do not represent an actual earth fault, such as those associated with electronic filters and variable frequency drives, helping reduce unwanted operation in electrically demanding installations.

Designed for 96 × 96 mm front-panel mounting, the ELR96PF supports 110, 230 and 400 V AC auxiliary supplies and operates at 50/60 Hz. Adjustable sensitivity from 0.03–30 A and trip delay from 0–5 s provide flexibility for commercial and industrial switchboards, machinery and low-voltage distribution systems.

Key Advantages

  • Electronic Type A residual current monitoring for low-voltage distribution networks.
  • Frequency filtering improves immunity to harmonic components associated with electronic equipment and frequency converters.
  • Adjustable 0.03–30 A residual current sensitivity supports a wide range of protection requirements.
  • Adjustable 0–5 s trip delay enables protection coordination and selectivity.
  • Fail Safe and automatic reset functions support dependable system operation.
  • Fault Memory LED provides a persistent indication that the relay has operated, even after automatic reset.

Advanced Earth Leakage Monitoring with Frequency Filtering

The ABB ELR96PF operates with an external toroidal transformer through which the live conductors of the protected circuit are routed. The toroid continuously detects residual current imbalance and sends the corresponding signal to the relay. When the measured residual current exceeds the selected threshold for the configured delay period, the ELR96PF switches its output contacts so associated tripping equipment can disconnect the protected circuit.

The ELR96PF is distinguished by its frequency filtering function, which makes the relay more resistant to harmonic current components that can occur in installations containing electronic filters and frequency converters. Together with adjustable sensitivity, adjustable trip delay, Fail Safe operation and fault memory indication, this makes the ELR96PF particularly suitable for sophisticated industrial and commercial electrical systems.

Typical Applications

  • Industrial low-voltage distribution systems.
  • Commercial electrical switchboards.
  • Variable frequency drive and motor control installations.
  • Industrial machinery and automation systems.
  • Electrical systems containing harmonic-producing electronic equipment.
  • Earth leakage protection using external ABB toroidal transformers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ABB ELR96PF used for?

The ABB ELR96PF is an electronic Type A residual current monitor and relay used with an external toroidal transformer to monitor earth leakage and provide residual current protection in low-voltage electrical distribution systems.

What is special about the ELR96PF frequency filter?

The frequency filter improves the relay’s resistance to harmonic current components that are not caused by an actual earth fault, helping reduce unwanted operation in installations containing electronic filters and frequency converters.

What residual current range can the ABB ELR96PF monitor?

The ELR96PF provides adjustable residual current sensitivity from 0.03–30 A, allowing the protection threshold to be configured for different applications.

What supply voltage does the ABB ELR96PF require?

The ELR96PF supports 110, 230 and 400 V AC auxiliary supplies with a tolerance of ±20%.

Does the ABB ELR96PF require a toroidal transformer?

Yes. The ELR96PF operates with a compatible external toroidal transformer, which detects residual current imbalance in the protected conductors and provides the measurement signal to the relay.
