Why Choose the ABB Orion3-4-K2C-090-B Safety Light Grid?

The ABB Orion3-4-K2C-090-B is the active unit of an Orion3 Base Type 4 safety light grid designed for body detection and access protection around hazardous industrial machinery. Unlike conventional light grids requiring powered transmitter and receiver units, Orion3 Base combines both optical functions within the active unit and uses a separate passive mirror unit to return the beams.

This model provides 4 optical beams, a 900 mm protected height and an operating range of 0.5–6.5 m. The configuration is intended for body detection at machine entrances, robot cells and other hazardous access points where reliable electro-sensitive protection is required without installing power and control wiring on both sides of the protected opening.

The Orion3-4-K2C-090-B operates from a 24 V DC supply and provides two PNP OSSD safety outputs. With Type 4 performance, PL e / Category 4 capability, SIL 3 functional safety performance and an IP65 aluminium housing, it provides a robust solution for demanding industrial access-protection applications.

Key Advantages

  • Type 4 safety light grid designed for high-level industrial access protection.
  • 4-beam configuration specifically intended for body detection.
  • 900 mm protected height provides effective coverage across machine access points.
  • 0.5–6.5 m operating range supports a variety of industrial guarding layouts.
  • Only the active side requires electrical power, simplifying machine wiring.
  • Uses a passive mirror unit to reflect the beams back to the active unit.
  • Dual PNP OSSD safety outputs provide straightforward safety-system integration.
  • 12 ms response time supports rapid detection of entry into the protected area.

Key Features

  • ABB Orion3 Base safety light grid series.
  • Active unit for use with the corresponding passive mirror unit.
  • Type 4 electro-sensitive protective equipment.
  • Designed for body detection and access protection.
  • 4 optical beams.
  • 900 mm protected height.
  • 0.5–6.5 m operating distance.
  • 12 ms response time.
  • 24 V DC ±20% power supply.
  • 2 PNP safety outputs.
  • M12 8-pole male connector.
  • IP65 ingress protection.
  • Integrated restart interlock and External Device Monitoring capability.
  • Durable painted aluminium housing for industrial installations.

Reliable Access Protection with Simplified Wiring

The ABB Orion3 Base design differs from a conventional through-beam safety light grid because both the transmitter and receiver are incorporated into the powered active unit. The corresponding passive unit contains mirrors that reflect the optical beams back across the protected opening. This means electrical power and safety-system wiring are required on only one side of the installation.

When a person passes through the 4-beam protective field, interruption of the beams causes the active unit's OSSD safety outputs to change state so the connected safety control system can stop or prevent hazardous machine movement. With a 900 mm protected height, 12 ms response time and Type 4 safety performance, the Orion3-4-K2C-090-B is particularly suited to dependable body detection at industrial machine access points.

Typical Applications

  • Industrial machine access protection.
  • Robot cell entrances and automated work areas.
  • Hazardous-area perimeter access points.
  • Automated production and assembly machinery.
  • Conveyor and material handling systems.
  • Packaging and processing machinery.
  • Applications where wiring is preferred on only one side of the protected opening.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ABB Orion3-4-K2C-090-B used for?

The ABB Orion3-4-K2C-090-B is a Type 4 safety light grid active unit designed for body detection and access protection around hazardous machinery, robot cells and automated industrial areas.

How many beams does the Orion3-4-K2C-090-B have?

The Orion3-4-K2C-090-B uses 4 optical beams and provides a protected height of 900 mm.

What is the operating range of the Orion3-4-K2C-090-B?

The Orion3-4-K2C-090-B has an operating range of 0.5–6.5 m when used with the appropriate Orion3 passive mirror unit.

Does the Orion3-4-K2C-090-B require a separate powered receiver?

No. The Orion3 Base design incorporates both transmitting and receiving functions into the active unit. A corresponding passive unit containing mirrors reflects the beams back to the active side, so electrical power is required on only one side.

What safety performance does the Orion3-4-K2C-090-B provide?

The Orion3 Base is a Type 4 electro-sensitive protective device with functional safety capability up to PL e, Category 4 and SIL 3 / SILCL 3 when correctly incorporated into a compliant machine safety system.
