Choosing the Right Sensing and Safety Products

Machine safety and machine sensing use related hardware for different purposes. Standard sensors detect position and presence for control; safety-rated devices must reliably stop the machine when a guard is opened or a person enters a hazardous zone, and must be selected to the Performance Level your risk assessment requires.

Safety Switches

Guard-locking and safety interlock switches to ISO 14119 detect guard position and can hold the guard closed until the hazard has stopped.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about machine safety and sensing. For help matching devices to your risk assessment, our technical team can talk through the Performance Level requirements.

What Performance Level do I need?
The Performance Level (PL a–e) comes from the risk assessment under ISO 13849-1, based on the severity of injury, frequency of exposure and possibility of avoidance. Most guard interlocks on industrial machinery need PL c or PL d; devices such as safety switches and light curtains are specified with the PL and category they can achieve.
What is the difference between a safety switch and a limit switch?
A limit switch detects position for control purposes. A safety switch has positive-opening contacts, coded actuators or guard locking to ISO 14119 so it cannot be easily defeated and fails to a safe state. Only safety-rated devices should be used to protect people.
When should I use a light curtain instead of a guard?
Use a light curtain where operators need frequent access – loading a press or palletiser, for example – and a physical guard would slow production. The safety distance must be calculated to ISO 13855 from the machine stopping time.
Do I need a safety relay or a safety controller?
A safety relay suits one or two safety functions such as an E-stop circuit and a guard door. A configurable safety controller is more economical once you have several zones, muting or complex logic.
What is guard locking and when is it required?
Guard locking holds the guard closed until the hazardous motion has stopped. It is required where the machine takes longer to stop than a person takes to reach the hazard after opening the guard, or where opening mid-cycle would damage the process.
Which sensing and safety brands does LED Controls supply?
We supply Pizzato, Carlo Gavazzi, Lovato Electric, Emas, IMO, ABB and Finder.
