Why Choose the ABB OPR 45 Early Streamer Emission Air Terminal?
The ABB OPR 45, order code 7TCA083010R0386, is an advanced Early Streamer Emission Air Terminal (ESEAT) designed to protect buildings, industrial sites and open-air installations against direct lightning strikes. Part of ABB’s hélita OPR lightning protection range, the OPR 45 uses patented Optimized Pulse Rod technology to initiate an upward leader and intercept a lightning strike before safely conducting the lightning current towards the earth termination system.
The OPR 45 provides a 45 µs triggering time advance ΔT, positioning it between the OPR 30 and OPR 60 within ABB’s three-model OPR range. Depending on installation height and the required lightning protection level, the OPR 45 can provide a substantial protection radius, making it particularly suitable for structures and sites where a large protected area is required from a single air terminal.
Constructed from 304L stainless steel, the OPR system is engineered for demanding outdoor environments. ABB tests OPR air terminals with lightning currents up to 100 kA, while the OPR 45 features IP67 protection, resistance to wind speeds up to 230 km/h and a wide operating temperature range for dependable long-term external installation.

Optimized Pulse Rod Lightning Protection
The ABB OPR system uses Early Streamer Emission technology to generate an upward leader during the development of a lightning discharge. The OPR air terminal is positioned above the structure being protected so that the upward leader can intercept the descending lightning leader and provide a controlled path for the resulting lightning current through the down conductors and earth termination system.
The OPR 45 provides a 45 µs time advance, enabling a larger protected area than a conventional passive air terminal under the applicable ESE design method. The final protection radius depends on the air terminal height above the protected surface and the required lightning protection level, so system design and installation should follow ABB recommendations and NF C 17-102.
