Ingress Protection: What your Electrical Enclosure’s IP Rating Means
IP stands for Ingress Protection. “Ingress” means “getting in”, so Ingress Protection means “keeping things out”. Therefore, the IP rating of an electrical enclosure is a standardised code that shows how resistant that enclosure is to solids (usually dust and dirt) and liquids (usually water).
